Cardiac Surgeon from St. Petersburg State University Presents AI Solutions at International Conference
Cardiac surgeon Gleb Irlamovich Kim, Associate Professor at St. Petersburg State University and specialist at the Center of Cardiac Surgery and Interventional Cardiology of the Pirogov Clinic of High Medical Technologies, delivered keynote presentations at the international scientific and practical conference “Big Medicine for a Big Region”.
In his talks, Dr. Kim presented an expert overview of the leading global trends in the application of artificial intelligence in cardiac surgery and introduced Expert Opinion AI, a unique Russian AI-based system designed to perform comprehensive cardiovascular diagnostics within minutes.
The presentations demonstrated how artificial intelligence is transforming every stage of patient care — from rapid automated processing of echocardiography and CT data to the creation of patient “digital twins” used for virtual surgical planning. Special emphasis was placed on the transition from basic automation to preventive cardiac surgery, where algorithms support prediction of long-term surgical outcomes and selection of individualized treatment strategies.
According to Dr. Kim, these technologies address critical systemic challenges by reducing subjectivity in diagnostic assessments, saving physicians’ time, and enabling a shift toward personalized medicine. Artificial intelligence does not replace the surgeon; instead, it enhances clinical expertise and improves both safety and effectiveness of treatment.
The “Big Medicine for a Big Region” conference brought together more than 1,000 physicians from various specialties, along with experts in healthcare digitalization, in Saint Petersburg. Dr. Kim’s presentations on the practical implementation of AI sparked active discussion and laid the groundwork for future collaborative research and clinical initiatives.
The cardiac surgery department at St. Petersburg State University is recognized as one of the leading centers in the Northwestern region, providing the full spectrum of high-tech cardiac and vascular procedures. Ongoing research, innovation, and integration of advanced technologies into routine clinical practice enable the Center to deliver care at international standards even in the most complex cases, significantly improving patients’ quality of life.
