Cardiac Surgeon from the Center of Cardiac Surgery Featured in the “Russian Code. Sovereign Future” Media Project
Cardiac surgeon Gleb Irlamovich Kim from the Center of Cardiac Surgery and Interventional Cardiology at St. Petersburg State University has become the featured expert of the media project “Russian Code. Sovereign Future”. The project introduces viewers to young scientists and innovators developing advanced technologies aimed at improving quality of life and advancing national science.
In the latest episode, Gleb Kim presents Expert Opinion AI, the first artificial intelligence–based clinical decision support system for cardiac surgery in Russia. Developed in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of experts, the system is designed to assist physicians in selecting optimal treatment strategies for patients with cardiovascular diseases.
Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. The complexity of diagnosis and the exceptionally high risks associated with aortic surgery require not only surgical expertise, but also rapid and accurate decision-making. During a standard 15-minute consultation, a physician must review the patient’s medical history, perform a physical examination, and analyze extensive diagnostic data, including computed tomography studies that may contain between 400 and 1,500 images.
The AI-based algorithm significantly accelerates CT data processing by performing precise segmentation of the aorta, continuously identifying anatomical landmarks, and generating a comprehensive diagnostic report. This enables the creation of a digital assistant that provides clinicians with structured examination results and recommended treatment plans.
At present, the system is being tested and refined in real clinical settings. By reducing the physician’s workload and minimizing the risk of complications, artificial intelligence contributes directly to improved patient safety and outcomes. The next phase of development will focus on creating an intraoperative monitoring system capable of analyzing real-time parameters during surgery and supporting surgeons with evidence-based recommendations.
The cardiac surgeons of the Center of Cardiac Surgery at St. Petersburg State University represent a highly experienced team that integrates classical medical principles with cutting-edge digital technologies. This comprehensive approach enables successful treatment of even the most complex cardiovascular conditions. In a previous educational video addressing the causes, symptoms, and diagnosis of aortic regurgitation, Gleb Kim emphasized the importance of timely medical consultation. The AI system he is developing represents the next step forward — transforming complex diagnostic data into ready-to-use clinical protocols and making the expertise of leading cardiac surgeons in Saint Petersburg accessible to colleagues across Russia.
